The idea for this work arose at the very beginning of my artistic journey, when I was still a student and couldn’t find a way to paint what I felt. During that period of exploration, he had a dream: the room of his adolescence, in the Spanish Quarter of Naples. He looked up at the ceiling and there, in place of the plaster, was a window open to the sea. From that threshold suspended between sleep and wakefulness, an image was born that has never left him: the sea not in front of us, but above us—not a horizon to be reached, but a sky to be inhabited.
This work is born from the union of two times: the writing of the past imprinted on paper and the pictorial gesture of the present.
The watercolor is laid out on an original 19th-century manuscript—paper already bearing traces of history, words, and lives lived. Above this layer of memory, the blue of the sea stretches upward, suspended, as in the vision that generated it: an invitation to look beyond one’s inner boundaries.
The image isn’t meant to describe a physical place. It evokes a space within the soul: the opening toward the sky, the expansion of consciousness, the fertile silence of one who knows how to be with himself—the same silence of that Neapolitan room where, for the first time, the sea entered from an unexpected place: from above, like a revelation.
